I'm intrigued with the process of laying down paint, ink and charcoal on paper. I like feeling the movement of my hand as I shape the image. I like partnering with the paper as it provides friction or yields to the flow of paint. I often cut up paintings from figure studies and re-assemble them into little abstracts. Large portraits become smaller patterns of color or surreal landscapes, and sometimes faces swim back into view. After studying with Phil Sylvester at The Drawing Studio in Portland for several years now, I still feel like an adventurous beginner. And that makes me happy.
